RUNNING HEAD: Good Will Hunting GOOD WILL HUNTING Myriam Smith St. Thomas University May 3, 2012 Good Will Hunting Good Will Hunting is a poetic story of a young man who works as a janitor at MIT while living in one of the rough neighborhood in South Boston. Despite his gift in Mathematics, he is still having a hard time finding his place in the world. Matt Damon plays a young genius with a troubled childhood and a troubled mind that was severely abused as a child and has been in trouble with the law on numerous occasions. The movie is a passage through the mind of Will Hunting as he is required to undergo therapy instead of going to jail. Stellan Skarsgard who plays Professor Lambeau†¦show more content†¦Will has such difficulty trusting people to enter his life in an intimate manner that the only people he can relates to besides his friends are the people he read books about. Will and the psychologist had a very interesting conversation which shows the starting point of him feeling at ease with the doctor by making jokes: Sean: Do you have a soul mate? Will: Define that. Sean: Someo ne you can relate to, someone who opens things up for you. Will: Sure, I got plenty. Sean: Well, name them. Will: Shakespeare, Nietzsche, Frost, OConner... Sean: Well thats great. Theyre all dead. Will: Not to me, theyre not. Sean: You cant have a lot of dialogue with them. Will: not without a heater and some serious smelling salts (Good Will hunt, 1997). Will felt overwhelmed when the professor tried to help him find a job. He feels that because of his talent, they will use that to their advantages and will treat him like he is just a subject and not a human being. He knows that he can easily do the professor’s job, but he rather work constructions instead of explaining math to people like professor Lambeau. Will lacks empathy in so many ways. Because of his ego and fear, he does not feel that he needs help from anybody. The only person he listens to is his best friend Chuckie.
