Organizational culture is fundamentally about symbolic meaning and as Essay - 1
Organizational culture is fundamentally about symbolic significance and as such cannot be managed. Discuss - Essay ExampleBy symbolism people consciously give shape and form to their own reality. naturalism does not constitute of preys to which humans react, rather it is the social environment within which people act according to their own perspective of the situation. Any object or action can be called a symbol when it has a differentiated meaning from its actual self. An object or action becomes a symbol when it is not perceived by their apparent form but by the meaning applied to it by the members of the governing body. For instance a large desk is not viewed as an object of convenience for various activities, but is regarded as a representative of the organizations power, placement and influence. Thus, the desk becomes a pagan symbol of the organizations status (Schultz, 1995, p.76). Organizational culture is imbibed with abstract aspects like feelings, emotions and thought processes of people, and also with objects for their symbolic values rather than their instrumental values. Organizational culture is thus not aristocratical to manage since many profound aspects of culture like visions and feelings of people must be considered with great value when objective is to bring possible changes to organizational culture. This reputation focuses on the interconnection of symbolism and organizational culture. ... In the last few decades, most academics have been suggesting that the idea of culture is the environment and the climate created by the organization for management of its people. Organizational culture is the system of feelings, thoughts and beliefs of a group of people associated with an organization, and the meaning that people attach to their actions. It reflects the views of the employees about the way things are done in an organization (ODonnell & Boyle, 2008, p.viii). Thus, culture provides a sense of identity to an organization. The cultur e of an organization encompasses everything that it is good at and all the things that worked in the past. These concepts are generally accepting by the employees who have been working in an organization for a long period. When new employees join the organization, they learn about the legends of the organization. With time such legends become the norm which essence they become the normal and accepted pattern of behavior. (ODonnell & Boyle, 2008, pp.4-5) In recent times management theories have been emphasizing on the managers the importance of creating a strong cultural ambiance within the organization (ODonnell & Boyle, 2008, p.viii). The fascinating thing about culture is that it indicates a phenomenon that is hidden beneath the surface and is invisible but has powerful impact. floriculture shapes the behavioral patterns of the members of a group through the common beliefs that are held in that group (Schein, 2010, p.14). It has been suggested that culture and leadership are fun damentally intertwined. (Schein, 2010, p.xi) There are triad elements to this 1) the leaders are

Imagination & Identity Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Imagination & Identity - Essay ExampleFrom the time that ace is young, there is a perception and specific reality that is created in terms of identity. Imaginary worlds and friends are some of the main concepts that are applied to this and which create a specific sense of what it means to belong to a specific identity or group. Most under sevens drive an invisible friend, and children create their speculative playmates non out of trauma but out of a serene sense of the possibilities of simile sometimes as figures of pure fantasy, sometimes, as observations of grownup discretion (Gopnik, 253). The ability to create an identity and sense of reality through imagination and by mimicking the identity of others is one which can then be expected to anticipate with children while growing older. This reality and vision is one which is combined not only with ideas of fiction but also with expectations of what one is to become. We were always about becoming, not being, about the prospe cts for the future, not about the inheritance of the past (Lapham, 45). Both of these articles agree that there is the need to create something from the imagination and to keep depicting that specific reality. The fiction then becomes a sense of identity that one grows into, either by imagining something, mimicking adult behaviors or by believing what one should be.The concept of building a reality out of imagination then leads into the capacity of creating identity. The creation of identity moves beyond the labels in which one holds, such as being a newborn Yorker or a scientist. More important, are behaviors and mannerisms that are associated with the identity and labels which one believes they have. Modeling an Animal Class Hierarchy by Employing UML Diagrams Assignment
Modeling an Animal Class Hierarchy by Employing UML Diagrams - Assignment ExampleInheritance is an important belief in object-oriented programming. It not only serves as an organizational technique, but also allows code to be reused between classes that share certain characteristics. It is also known as Is A relationship because the classes down in the inheritance hierarchy are derived from the higher classes. So an object instantiated from a derived class is also a typecast of the superclass (Dale, Joyce, & Weems, 2006). Generalization and specialization are the two constituents of an inheritance relationship. The base class, from which the child classes are derived from, is supposed to be the more generic class and the child classes with supernumerary members are handed to be the more specialized classes (Thampi, 2009). For example, a dog class can be considered as a sub class of an animal class. In this case the animal class is more generic class and the dog class is the speci alized version of the animal class. To construct the animal class hierarchy, we consider the classes Animal, Fish, mammal, Shark, Herring, Elephant and Rodent. Animal is modeled as the base class from which all the other classes inherit either manoeuverly or indirectly. Fish and Mammal classes are the direct child classes derived from the Animal class. Sharks and herring are types of fishes and hence we can derive these classes from the Fish class. Similarly elephants and rodents are both mammals and hence they can be derived from the Mammal class.

Maori Culture Essay Example for Free
Maori Culture EssayAbstractThe Maori, which means ordinary or common, arrived in New Zealand in the 14th century. Polynesian by descent, they came from the fab land of Hawaiki, believed by many experts to be a combination of places, including Tahiti, Samoa, Hawaii and the Cook Islands. Upon arriving in New Zealand, the Maori dubbed the picturesque land Aotearoa, or land of the capacious white cloud. The Maori CultureThe Maori like many other Pacific Islanders started their journey in a canoe. Living on an island afforded the Maori with a unique and diverse floriculture that is st sorrow evident in Modern day New Zealand. In the next few pages I will give you a brief glance of the Maori government agency of life then and now. I will discuss the belief and value system, gender roles, healing the sick and as well as the impact of Colonialism on the Maori way of life. There are three basic beliefs and values of the Maori. I nga wa o Mua, Whakapapa and Mana. I nga wa o Mu.Maori believe that ancestors and supernatural beings are ever-present and able to help the tribe in times of need. The Maori world view is to look in front of us to the past for guidance as that is where we came from. It was because of this philosophy that the Maori did not conveniently forget about the Treaty of Waitangi once it was signed. Through facing the past they can learn from past mistakes and not repeat them. This concept is tot all(prenominal)y reversed in other cultures, who try to encourage them to forget about the past and to put things behind themWhakapapaWhakapapa translated means genealogy. The Maori believe that everything and everyone are connected and at that placefore a part of their Whakapapa. Whakapapa includes genealogies of spiritual and mythological significance, as well as information about the persons tribe and the land he or she lives on. The Whakapapa is passed stamp out orally in the form of stories. One of the most famous stories is story of the creati on of Aotearoa. Aotearoa was pulled from the sea by the demi god Maui. Maui was the last of five brothers and was known to be clever. He hid in the canoe of his brothers and when they would not give him bait to fish he took his magical oddity and slashed his face and smeared the blood on his hook so that his blood would attract the fish. Smelling the blood the god of the sea gave Maui his biggest fish. Maui asked his brothers to not cut up and eat the fish until proper arrangements had been made to rest and thank the gods for their gift. While Maui was on land trying to pull the boat to shore his brothers started to cut the fish because it started to move. That is why Aotearoa the fish and the mountains and the valleys are where Mauis brothers assay to cut the fish.ManaAccording to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, Mana is Among Polynesian and Melanesian peoples, a supernatural force or power that may be ascribed to persons, spirits, or inanimate objects. Mana may be redeeming(pren ominal) or evil, beneficial or dangerous, but it is not impersonal it is never spoken of except in connection with powerful beings or things. The term was counterbalance used in the 19th century in the West in connection with righteousness, but mana is now regarded as a symbolic way of expressing the particular qualities attributed to persons of status in a hierarchical society, of providing sanction for their actions, and of explaining their failures. The Maori believe in three forms of Mana. The first case of Mana is the Mana that you have when you are born. This Mana comes from your Whakapapa and can attribute to the enjoin and status of your descendants. This Mana is not only the ancestor themselves but also the deeds that they did and the skills, traits and abilities taught to them by their tupuna (elders). The second type of Mana is Mana given to you by other people. Today there are people who seek Mana and deliberately go around trying to gain Mana by telling people about their own importance. There is a Maori saying The Kumara does not talk about its own sweetness. But Mana seekers do exactly that.Humbleness is a very highly valued trait in the Maori world. Many of the great leaders are very humble people, hence part of their greatness. The Maori people sing their praises, thereby heightening their Mana. You will never receive the great leaders singing their own praises. It is not that they are trying to be humble it is that they just are. The third type of Mana is Mana from the group. The best example I could come up with is the Mana of the marae. The marae is the sacred courtyard that you must be formally invited to enter for the first time. The marae is where challenges are met and issues are debated. When you stay on a Marae all are treated well and fed great food. When the visitor leaves they tell everyone about the great time they had thus increasing the Mana of the marae. If they tell everyone they were treated ill and unkind then the Mana o f the marae decreases. Traditional Maori folklore focuses on oppositions between pairs, such as earth and sky, life and death, and male and female. From the time of creation the original couple, Rangi (sky) and Papa (earth) were locked in sexual union until the god Tane was able to push them apart and provide for the creation of human life.So as you can see opposition existed in front the creation of human life according to Maori traditional stories. It then would suffice that opposition would exist throughout Maori culture. Premarital sexual relationships were considered normal for Maori adolescents. Both males and females were anticipate to have a series of private relationships before they married. When Maori females became sexually active, they were to publicly acknowledge this so that they could become tattooed. Tattooing marked their ritual and public passage into adulthood. It was also considered extremely attractive and erotic. Tattooing among the Maori was highly developed and extremely symbolic. Maori facial tattoos were created by two methods. One was by piercing and pigmenting the skin with a tattooing comb. The other was by creating permanent grooves in the face with a chisel-like instrument. .Females were also tattooed in Maori society. Female facial tattooing was known as ta ngutu. Designs were placed on the chin and lips. When it comes to unsoundness and healing in Maori culture things were very different before Colonization. In traditional times before the colonization of New Zealand, Maori saw science and religion as the same entity and believed that illnesses were caused by supernatural sources. Maori had a good concept of anatomy, physiology and the use of plants for healing only there was an undefined distinction between the heading and body.Maori believed an evil spirit or a type of witchcraft would attack an individual to cause ill-health as a punishment for breaking the tapu (sacred restriction) of the family that the spirit belonge d to. This type of illness was called mate atua (disease of the gods) since there was no obvious physical cause. The individual would experience pain, weakness, loss of appetite, malaise, fever and occasionally delirium due to possession of the spirit. When senior pilot James Cook colonized New Zealand in 1830 he brought with him, evasive plants and animals as well as guns, alcohol and diseases that the Maori were previously exposed to.New Zealands isolation meant that the Maori people lacked immunity to bacterial and viral infections that were common in other countries. The Maori found that their healing methods were ineffective against the new diseases and had to rely on the medicines of the missionaries. The authorization and popularity of the missionaries medicines assisted in the conversion of Maori to Christianity. It appeared to the Maori that the Christian god had superior powers and this attributed to the health and prosperity of the Europeans. The fundamentals of Maori so ciety, culture, religion and medicine became strained as religion was knotted in their everyday lives and many of their beliefs were based upon it. The people began to lose their Mana due to the shift of religion and the spread of Western knowledge undermining the tohungas ( spiritual leader) dresser The downfall of the whare wananga (school of learning) was also due to conflict between Maori religion and Christianity. In 1907 the Tohunga Supression Act was passed due to concern being raised over the practice and arctic of some tohunga. Maori healing was seen as dangerous by Western modern medicine as it was not scientifically proven. The Tohunga Suppression Act was repealed in 1962 til now this had little significance as some tohunga had practiced throughout the 20th century especially in remote rural areas of the country. Tohunga are still fundamental in current Rongoa Maori still modern tohunga have not been trained in traditional methods giving them a position of authority and prestige however they are still recognized as experts in their field. Many modern tohunga showed potential in their childhood by spending time with their elders and learning tribal and cultural lore. They then became an apprentice under an established tohunga to learn their expertise Current Maori healthcare is based on a holistic model that incorporates the physical, emotional, family and spiritual aspects of health. Each aspect must be treated or used to ensure full recovery of a patient. The current function of modern tohunga is varied. stuffy medicine is incorporated into the tohungas practice however traditional methods of karakia (chants) and inoi (prayer) are still extensively used. Native plants for medicinal purposes are widely used however application of uses varies between each practitioner.References1. Franklin- Barbajosa, Cassandra. Tattoo Pigments of Imagination. Osama Bin Ladens Strategy Essay Example for Free
Osama Bin Ladens Strategy EssayWhat were Osama bin Ladens intend strategies in response to the Arab Spring and why did he consider it a formidable event? In response to the revolutionary wave of demonstrations and protest (both non-violent and violent) end-to-end the Arab world, Osama Bin Laden wanted to reevaluate how Al-Qaida as a whole conducted their operations within the Muslim world. Osama Bin Laden viewed Al al-Qaidas in ability to attract followers as a weakness, He believed that a media campaign should be launched to incite people who have non yet revolted and exhort them to rebel against the rulers, (Lahoud et al. 2012, 3). By avoiding joining political parties and focusing on combat operations, for example in Afghanistan the Taliban were weakening the United States which had a cast out effect on the United States ability to assist leaders in the Muslim world with combating the Arab Spring, (Lahoud et al. 2012, 3). Osama Bin Laden viewed the Arab spring, which was sweeping across the Muslim sphere causing riots and protest as a time filled with great opportunity beca social function of the effect it was having on Governments such as Tunisia and Egypt. At the time he was writing, the presidents of Tunisia and Egypt, Zein al-Abidin bin Ali and Husni Mubarak had fallen.Bin Laden was convinced that their fall was bound to trigger a domino effect, and the fall of the remaining tyrants in the region was inevitable, (Lahoud et al. 2012, 48). apologise Osama bin Ladens relationship with regional jihadi groups at the time of his death. Senior Al Qaeda leadership held mixed feelings in regards to how to peck with regional jihadi groups. These regional groups were likely attracted to Al Qaeda after its much successful attack on September 11, 2009. While some Al Qaeda leadership felt that regional Jihadis should not be accepted into Al Qaeda, other leadership felt that only be including regional insurgents could Al Qaeda grow its numbers. Bin Laden re presented a third position, as he wanted to maintain communication, through his own penitentiary or that of his inner circle, with brothers everywhere, to urge restraint and provide advice, without granting them formal unity with al-Qaida, (Lahoud et al. 2012, 11-12).Explain how King and Taylor describe the radicalization operate for the purposes of their study, and why their study cerebrate on the radicalization of native jihadists. King and Taylor describe the radicalization process as virtuoso, which requires more than point of view tounderstand. This is why King and Taylor conducted analysis of all five radicalization models at one time in order to understand the process of radicalization. By comparing each method King and Taylor were able to note similarities and difference amongst the methods. The study focused on homegrown Jihadists because of the current threat towards the west as a result of radical ideology produced by terrorist organization such as Al Qaeda, (King and Taylor, 2011).Why do King and Taylor take the position that basing counter-terrorism or counter-radicalization strategies on models that have not been empirically validated can be misleading and raving mad? In addition, why do King and Taylor take the position that the narrative promoted by jihadists is amenable to empirical research? King and Taylor believe the understanding and process of radicalization cannot be narrowed down to one method because the reason behind one individuals path towards terrorism may differ from another, (King and Taylor 2011, 616). Also, King and Taylor believe insurgents use propaganda to their benefit. For example, by leading Muslims to believe the West is attacking not only Muslim countries but also Islam itself they are able to instill into Muslim that they must defend their fellow Muslim brothers and sisters. This is one method that is used in describing the early stages of the Radicalization, as described by the NYPD, (King and Taylor 2011, 617).W hat endpoints do King and Taylor reach, regarding their study of radicalization of homegrown jihadists and what recommendations do they make regarding future research? At the conclusion of their research, King and Taylor decided that each method provided important information in regards to their own consider method. When brought together, however, the commonalities and discrepancies between these models offered even greater insights, which may be used as a guiding framework for future research concerning homegrown jihadi radicalization, (King and Taylor 2011, 617). The conclusion primarily focused on three factors which King and Taylor label as contributing factors to the radicalization process, reaction to group relative deprivation, management of identities and lastly personality characteristics, (King and Taylor 2011, 617-618). on with these three factors King and Taylor suggest further research also focused on the internet and how it leads to radicalization and also theJihadi narrative and its ability to influence homegrown jihadists, (King and Taylor 2011, 618)
